THE “TOP TWO” PRIMARY – MAKE SURE THERE’S A REAL CHOICE IN THE 7TH C.D.
STEVE BEREN ON FOX NEWS: “BOLDLY RAISE THE REPUBLICAN BANNER” – CLICK HERE
I aim to succeed in the August 19 primary and win a spot on the general election ballot.
One party rule has harmed the citizens of the 7th congressional district. It is important for Republicans – not just in Seattle but throughout Washington State – to make sure there is a Republican candidate on the ballot in November against Jim McDermott. I'm promoting conservative values and Republican policies right in the heart of liberal Seattle and King County. But with the new “top two” primary system, there’s no guarantee that a Republican congressional candidate will be on the November ballot.
There must be a clear alternative in the general election. This can be accomplished if we all work together to make sure I win a spot on the November ballot by placing at least second in the August 19 “top two” primary.
We can’t allow the voters of the 7th congressional district to face a ballot limited to two liberal candidates, both supporting Christine Gregoire for governor. We can’t allow the Seattle and King County voters to face a ballot limited to two candidates, both favoring retreat from Iraq, both favoring higher taxes and bigger government, both favoring amnesty for illegal immigrants, both supporting government-run health care, both from the same party, both supporting Barack Obama for president.
Two Democrats running against each other in November would not benefit the people of the 7th congressional district, and it would hurt the overall effort of statewide GOP campaigns.
There are some high stake races in Washington State this year - electing Dino Rossi as Governor, re-electing Attorney General Rob McKenna, re-electing Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland, carrying the state for John McCain - and all of them would be negatively affected if two liberal, pro-tax, antiwar, Democratic Party candidates are the only choices in the 7th congressional district in November.
Without a Republican alternative on the November ballot, GOP turnout in Seattle and King County would be negatively affected. While the 7th congressional district is heavily Democratic, even a small incremental increase in the GOP percentage will make a difference in other races.
Your commitment, support, and effort is critical to my effort to make sure Seattle voters have a real choice in November. Please help today with an early and generous donation.
