MCDERMOTT'S VIEW OF COMMUNIST CUBA

Jim McDermott has a long history of votes favorable to the communist dictatorship in Cuba.  Here is just a small sampling:

McDermott voted against a resolution condemning the oppression of Cuba’s pro-democracy movement by the Cuban government and calling for the release of all of Cuba’s political prisoners and free elections in Cuba.  The resolution also asked the U.N. and the European Union to reevaluate their policies towards Cuba in light of human rights abuses in that nation.  (Vote 503, 9/29/05) (one of only 31 “no” votes)

McDermott opposed a resolution condemning the arrest of 75 Cuban activists, including labor organizers, librarians, and civic leaders in March 2003 and calling for the release of all of Cuba’s political prisoners and the legalization of labor unions, political parties and the free press.  The resolution also called on Cuba to hold free elections.  (Vote 137, 4/27/05)

McDermott voted against a resolution supporting the organizers and participants of the Assembly to Promote the Civil Society in Cuba held on May 20, 2005.  (Vote 162, 5/10/05)

Voted for an amendment prohibiting the use of funds to enforce new restrictions and rules in regard to the Cuban travel ban. (Vote 460, 9/21/04)

Voted for an amendment prohibiting the use of funds to carry out the embargo of Cuba. (Vote 461, 9/22/04)
