Seattle conservative activist Steve Beren announced in a radio broadcast February 6 that he will run for Congress against Jim McDermott. Choosing to launch his campaign on Ronald Reagan’s 97th birthday, Beren told KGNW’s Thor Tolo that his was a campaign of "five star conservatism." Beren said the five aspects of five star conservatism were fiscal conservatism, national security conservatism, immigration conservatism, social conservatism, and "optimism conservatism." One day after the "Super Tuesday" presidential primaries, Beren called Reagan's birthday "Super Wednesday," and urged Republicans to unit around traditional conservative policies and principles. Here is the text of the Beren candidacy announcement:
I’m Steve Beren, and I announce today that I am seeking the Republican nomination to run for Congress in the 7th Congressional District against Jim McDermott. I am a fiscal conservative, a social conservative, an immigration conservative, and a national security conservative.
The American people want to be safe from terrorist attack, so I will be campaigning in support of our troops and for a victory strategy in the war against Islamic fascism. The American people deserve economic security, so I will be campaigning for taxes to remain low, and for government spending to be sharply reduced.
The American people need secure borders, so I will be campaigning for an end to illegal immigration. My campaign will present an optimistic moral vision about the future of this country.
Right in the heart of liberal Seattle, there needs to be a debate. The Seattle area currently lacks political diversity, and this is not healthy. My goal is to start rebuilding the Republican Party in Seattle and King County, and to get a dialogue and debate going on major issues. This is an important dialogue; this is a debate worth having.
And in the long run Republican policies, conservative values, and free market solutions will win that debate. To learn more about how you can help my campaign, go to www.berenforcongress.com
I ask the voters of the 7th Congressional District to join my campaign, and to support my race against Jim McDermott. Together we can change the political atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest.
